Microsoft Teams Meetings: Why the Tab Opens Automatically But You Still Click Join

If you use Microsoft Teams through an Outlook calendar, you've probably noticed Auto Join Meetings gets you most of the way there automatically — and then hands the last step back to you. That's intentional, and it's worth explaining why.

What happens automatically

Once your Outlook calendar is connected, Auto Join Meetings detects the Teams link on your upcoming event and opens the meeting tab on its own, a few minutes before the meeting starts — no searching through the invite, no digging through Outlook. That part works today on both Free (up to 3 auto-opens/day) and Basic (unlimited).

What still needs your click

Once the Teams tab is open, you currently need to click "Join now" yourself, on any plan. Unlike Google Meet, where Basic-plan auto-clicks and confirms entry for you, Teams doesn't yet have that last step automated.

Why this specific step is harder to automate

Every platform structures its join flow a little differently — button placement, permission prompts, whether it nudges you toward the desktop app first. Google Meet's flow has been the most consistent to automate reliably, which is why full auto-click shipped there first. Teams (and Zoom) are being worked through the same process, but aren't at that reliability bar yet — we'd rather ship auto-open now and get auto-click right later than automate a click that sometimes lands in the wrong place.

Why the tab-auto-open alone still matters

The click itself is a two-second action. The part that actually costs you time and attention is everything before it: remembering the meeting is happening, finding the right Outlook invite, locating the Teams link inside it, and opening a new tab. Auto Join Meetings removes all of that — you just click Join on a tab that's already sitting open and waiting for you.

What to expect going forward

Teams auto-click is on the same roadmap as Zoom's. As it matures and passes the same reliability testing Google Meet went through, it'll move from "tab opens automatically" to fully hands-free. For now, see the Microsoft Teams help article for current status and setup.
