Zoom Auto-Join: What's Working Today (and What's Still a Prototype)

We'd rather tell you exactly where Zoom support stands than oversell it. Here's a plain-language status update on what Auto Join Meetings does for Zoom today, and what's still in progress.

What works reliably today

Zoom gets the same core automation as Google Meet and Microsoft Teams: once your Google Calendar or Outlook is connected, Auto Join Meetings detects the Zoom link on your upcoming event and opens the meeting tab automatically a few minutes before it starts. That part is solid, available on both Free (up to 3 auto-opens/day) and Basic (unlimited).

What's still a prototype

Actually clicking into the Zoom call — passing the "Join" screen, handling Zoom's own launch flow, and confirming you're in — is an early prototype today, available to Basic-plan users. It's a work in progress specifically because Zoom's join flow varies more than Google Meet's (different launch prompts, the browser-vs-app choice, waiting rooms), so we're being careful to get it right rather than ship something that fails silently.

Why we're calling this out instead of hiding it

It would be easy to market Zoom the same way we market Google Meet's auto-click, since both are technically "supported." We'd rather you know upfront that Zoom's click automation isn't at the same maturity level yet, so there are no surprises during an actual meeting.

What this means for you right now

You'll never have to hunt for a Zoom link buried in a calendar invite — the tab opens itself.
You may still need to click "Join" yourself once the tab is open, the same as with Microsoft Teams today.
If you're on Basic, you can try the auto-click prototype as it improves — behavior may not be 100% consistent yet.

What's next

Zoom auto-click is active development, not a shelved idea. As it matures, it'll follow the same path Google Meet's did: broader testing, then a move from "prototype" to a fully supported, reliable feature. Check the Zoom status article for the latest.
